History
Origin House Nolby
Huize Nolby began as a small and simple cottage. Over the years, it was lovingly renovated and expanded. The staircase has even stood in three different places. Today, the house has grown into a spacious, modern and cosy home with its own unique character.
The brother of the former owner of our current home wrote a beautiful book about all the houses in Mosstakan and the surrounding area. In this book, he also tells the story of Huize Nolby.
The story begins in 1835, when the land belonging to Öststuga was divided. In 1850, a house named Nygård was built. Later, this name changed to Nordby, which was eventually altered to Nolby.
The typical Swedish wooden house started out modestly, but grew steadily through the generations. New rooms and spaces were added, giving the house the playful and charming layout it has today.
Our own journey with Huize Nolby
We, Jürgen and Judith, emigrated to beautiful Sweden in November 2020 to follow our dream. We had many plans, some of which we had to adjust due to the coronavirus pandemic. But when we heard that Huize Nolby, the house next to ours, was for sale, it felt like a unique opportunity. We immediately decided to turn it into a warm and welcoming holiday home.
In November 2020, we became the proud owners of Huize Nolby. At that time, the house needed a great deal of love and attention. The previous owner had left suddenly due to illness, and the house had remained untouched for four years. Everything was still exactly as he had left it.
With patience, dedication and enthusiasm, we set to work. It took us several months to empty the house completely, clean it thoroughly and renovate it. We also had a new water source drilled, so the house would be ready for the future. Thanks to the help of friends and our children, the once-abandoned house gradually transformed into the nostalgic and warm holiday home it is today.
Rental
As of 1 May 2024, Huize Nolby has officially become available to rent. We are delighted to welcome our guests and hope to share our love for Sweden, the land of the ever-singing forests. So far, we have succeeded in passing on this sense of magic to all our visitors, and that fills us with gratitude and joy every time.
A charming story from the past
A friend of ours told us a charming childhood story about one of the first residents of Huize Nolby. Having coffee during fika was something you definitely shouldn’t do at her house. As a young boy, he was invited with his father for coffee, but he knew it was better not to eat or drink anything there.
He was given a glass of lemonade and his father a cup of coffee. They couldn’t refuse the biscuit that came with it, of course. As soon as the lady of the house stepped into the kitchen, the little boy quickly slipped the biscuit into his pocket and poured his lemonade into a plant pot. He didn’t dare look at his father, afraid he would be told off for what he had done.
When they stepped outside afterwards, he was astonished to see his father take the biscuit out of his own pocket and toss it to the birds. His father gave him a wink and said it was good he had done the same. The boy blushed. He had never seen his father throw away a biscuit before.
